Against All Odds
As the Coyotes continue to ignore the sounds of outside distractions, unfavorable predictions and financial woes, they have an uncanny knack to “march” to the beat of their own version of the “Miracle on Ice” which is of course when the US Olympic team beat the USSR in the medal round in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. The US Olympic team defied all odds in the 1980 Olympics and won the Gold. Hockey in Phoenix just might be the sequel to the 1980 US Olympic teams’ quest for the Gold.
If the game show Jeopardy had a special hockey show the first answer to the contestants would be: A hot goaltender, great chemistry, renewed confidence, the belief they can and the will to win. Not to mention Dave Tippett, the best coach in hockey and Don Maloney, the best general manager in hockey. The contestants would get the right question if they asked: What does the Phoenix Coyotes have that could defy the odds in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs?
The Phoenix Coyotes, by many odds makers were 40 to 1 to win the Stanley cup prior to the start of the season. Many analysts didn’t even pick them to make the playoffs. Sometimes analysts and odds makers get it wrong because they don’t consider powerful intangibles. In addition, underestimating the greatness of Mike Smith, the Phoenix Coyotes goaltender certainly had the odds makers fooled. Not only were some of the analysts incorrect, the Coyotes did made the playoffs and they came in first in the Pacific Division ahead of the perennial favorite San Jose Sharks and upcoming power house Los Anagles Kings. The playoffs started with 16 teams for round one and now with 8 teams remaining in the second round of the playoffs, the Coyotes are 10 to 1 odds to win the Stanley Cup which puts them alone as the least likely team to win the Stanley Cup.
Yet, don’t count the Coyotes out. This is an organization that has defied all odds before. 3 years ago the Coyotes went into Bankruptcy defeating very powerful opponents namely Jim Balsillie, former co-CEO of the Canadian company Research In Motion and a powerful negative press campaign saying that hockey doesn’t work in the desert. Over the last 3 years, the Coyotes have seen potential owners come and go and some come back again only to fade away once again. Fights between the City of Glendale and the Goldwater Institute pertaining to the Arizona Gift clause, lease agreement interpretations and a whole assortment of other legal issues have continued which creates an air of uncertainly. Even some politicians got involved trying to keep the Coyotes. However despite all the distractions the Coyotes are still here. Rumors that they will stay seem to be surfacing again unlike the start of the playoffs last year where rumors said they were on their way out. Yet, the Phoenix Coyotes have weathered some powerful storms over the last few years and now seem to be playing like a tornado destroying teams that are in their path and “raining” all sorts of chaos over their opponents including taking out the Chicago Blackhawks in 6 games this year in round one. And through the first two games in round two, the Coyotes are leading the series with the Nashville Predators 2 to 0. Odds are one thing yet defying the odds are what makes the Phoenix Coyotes a team to reckon with and a team that may be destined to go all the way.
