AFL: Arizona Rattlers Head Coach Kevin Guy
On Saturday the Arizona Rattlers and Head Coach Kevin Guy return to the Arena Bowl for the third straight season. If the Rattlers win and receive the Foster Trophy again, it would put Coach Guy in an elite group. He would be the sixth head coach to win multiple AFL titles and only the second coach to ever win back to back titles. Former coach Tim Marcum is currently the only coach to win back to back titles and he did it on two occasions.
No coach has had a better “run” in the last four years since the league “rebranded” itself after the 2009 season was canceled. Guy is 54-16 in the regular season in that time-frame and in the last three seasons since the AFL went to an 18-game season he is 44-10.
Also in the last three years Guy has posted two seasons with at least 15 wins becoming the first AFL head coach to ever do that. Only four teams in league history have posted 15 or more wins in a regular season and Guy has two of them. He is 7-1 in the playoffs the last three years with his lone loss being in Arena Bowl XXIV against Jacksonville; and that was on the final play of the game.
Last week’s 65-57 win over Spokane in the National Conference Championship Game was Guy’s 100th overall game as an AFL head coach and that includes 70 wins.
On Saturday it will be a rematch of last year’s Arena Bowl teams and marks the first time in AFL history the same two teams play each other in back-to-back ArenaBowls
This year in the regular season the Rattlers beat the Soul on both occasions they played; and Guy has never lost to Philadelphia (4-0).
Arena Bowl XXVI is slated for this Saturday at 10:00 AM AZ time and can be seen on local CBS channel 5. It marks the first Arena Bowl since 2008 that will be on broadcast network television. So early Saturday morning turn on the game and cheer for your Arizona Rattlers and Head Coach Kevin Guy.
