Coyotes lose to Sens in OT

Jason Spezza had a fine night with a hat trick as the Ottawa Senators visited the Phoenix Coyotes and went home to Ontario with a 4-3 OT victory Tuesday.

Cory Conacher got the deciding goal in OT with 2:12 left. Conacher was left unmarked by the left post of Mike Smith and after a great cross-ice feed by Marc Methot, Conacher’s wrister beat Smith and ended the night.

After a dull first period, where the Coyotes only managed to get 4 shots on goal, Phoenix went on to grab a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Rob Klinkhammer made it 1-0 after 1:18 after Craig Anderson left a juicy rebound, and Radim Vrbata doubled the lead after 2:35 with a real sniper effort from the high slot.

After that is was the Jason Spezza show. His first goal came after 8:42 in the second period where he manged to find the loose puck right by the goal line after a scramble in front of Smith.

Spezza’s second goal came after a mistake by Smith 1:50 into the third period. Smith went out to play the puck, but when trying to handle it, the puck went into the trapezoid and Smith had to leave it. Colin Greening snatched up the puck and served it to Spezza who put it in a wide-open net as Smith collided with one of his defensemen and was unable to get back in the crease.

Spezza completed his hat trick and gave the Senators a 3-2 lead after 7:19 when he beat Smith with a slapshot from the point in power play.

Both teams looked pretty sluggish out on the ice as the Coyotes had just come back from a five-game road trip and the Senators were finishing up a six-game road trip.

Coyotes did end up tying the game after Oliver Ekman-Larsson took a shot from the blue line on a power play that went off Mike Ribeiro and in behind Anderson after 16:30.

Phoenix had a couple of good chances in OT, but Conacher managed to grab the win for the Sens.

The Coyotes have the day off on Wednesday before it’s time to look ahead to the game against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday in Anaheim. And on Saturday the Detroit Red Wings are visiting Jobing.com Arena.
