MLB: AZ Diamondbacks Pitching Staff Concerns
As the Diamondbacks finish up their last few games before the All-Star break this weekend the front office personnel and coaches will have some decisions to make. An assessment will need to be made on two injured starting pitchers. Brandon McCarthy who has been out with shoulder inflammation since May 31st and Trevor Cahill who has been out since July 1st with a hip contusion; and we later found out he had also been experiencing shoulder soreness. Both have been throwing in recent days. McCarthy threw over 20 pitches in a simulated game and is scheduled to throw another simulated game Sunday. Cahill could start throwing a bullpen session this weekend.
The rotation could look different even before both guys return if the Diamondbacks pull off a trade for both a starter and a reliever.
Other issues will come up for the Diamondbacks when McCarthy and Cahill return.
Does Tyler Skaggs stay in the rotation? Skaggs has the makings of something special, but with the Diamondbacks in a race for the NL West division they cannot have Skaggs be inconsistent.
Where does Ian Kennedy go? Kennedy must improve on his 3-5 record. Does he get traded? He is salary arbitration-eligible after this season.
What do you do with Randall Delgado? Do you move him to the bullpen? Does he go back to Triple A Reno until the September call-ups?
Has Wade Miley figured out his issues? He recovered from an early deficit on Thursday night to earn his second straight win. Also he has thrown eight innings in back-to-back outings and has only allowed four earned runs over his last three starts. Let’s hope it continues for the left-hander heading back after the All-Star break.
What becomes of the bullpen? Does Kevin Towers make a trade for a closer? Do they make a trade for a set-up guy with David Hernandez’ inconsistences? Remember other teams involved in a playoff run are looking for the same thing as the Diamondbacks.
Do you put J J Putz back in after the All-Star break if his arm strength and speed are back? Can the Diamondbacks hold onto first place with Heath Bell as the closer?
Do you let Will Harris become the closer? He has a 2.11 ERA in 21 innings of work. Who will take his spot if he becomes the closer?
Or, do you let Brad Ziegler close out games? He is the Diamondbacks ground-ball specialist and once again who takes his place? Can Josh Collmenter or even Heath Bell do what Ziegler has been doing?
So while the players get away for the break, except Paul Goldschmidt and Patrick Corbin who are on the NL All-Star team, the Diamondbacks coaches and staff will be busy evaluating the team for the second half of the baseball season.
