MLB: AZ Diamondbacks Weekend Series Preview

Our Arizona Diamondbacks just finished an exciting series against their NL West rival, the LA Dodgers, winning 2 of 3. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Diamondbacks are in San Diego at Petco Park, one of Major League Baseball’s best ballparks for pitchers. The Diamondbacks can’t let up with the suddenly rolling Padres The teams have split the six games they have played so far this season.

The Padres are 19-14 at home; while the Diamondbacks are one of the better road teams with a 20-15 road record.

The Diamondbacks had a season-high 20 hits on Wednesday against the Dodgers and it would be nice to see them do the same at Petco Park.

The Diamondbacks will throw Trevor Cahill to the mound Friday night, after coming off his shortest outing of 2013.

Another good night at the plate from the Diamondback hitters will benefit Cahill. He has a 13.50 ERA; losing his last two June outings. He was charged with eight runs in 3 2/3 innings in last Saturday’s 10-5 loss to San Francisco at Chase Field.

The right-hander lasted only 3 2/3 innings in one of his five outings against the Padres last season, but went 1-0 with a 0.60 ERA in two starts at Petco Park.

He will face a Padres team going for a seventh win in nine games after a three-game sweep of the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves. San Diego is 27-19 since it started the season 5-15.

The Padres scored 15 runs against the Braves despite hitting just  .227, but their manager Bud Black had to be delighted with his teams ERA of 1.99 in that series.

Eric Stults, 5-5 with 3.53 on the year will try to keep that going as he makes his second start against the Diamondbacks in three weeks. He is 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts since a 5-2 loss at Arizona on May 24, when he gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Martin Prado, who is 6 for 14 against Stults, should be ready for him tonight. In fact, Prado is 11 for 25 against Padres pitching this season. Paul Goldschmidt went 6 for 16 with five RBIs in those games, but is only batting .138 in Arizona’s last seven games.

Lately the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation has struggled. Over the past 12 games the starters have a dreadful 8.32 ERA, and during that time the Diamondbacks are 6-6.

Saturday’s starter for the Diamondbacks will be Wade Miley who is 4-5 with a 4.89 ERA for the year, against Clayton Richard who is 1-5 with an 8.06 ERA.

Sunday’s scheduled starter for the Diamondbacks is Ian Kennedy, who is appealing his 10 game suspension handed down today by Major League Baseball.

Manager Kirk Gibson will serve his one game suspension tonight. Bench Coach Alan Trammell will guide the team.
