MLB: Cano Helps Seattle Sweep Yanks, Elias With 10 K’s

Thursday night saw a pitching matchup between Hiroki Kuroda and Roenis Elias, giving 25-year-old rookie Elias his fist win, and first game, at Yankee Stadium. It was the first time Elias pitched against this Yankees team and he led the Mariners to a 4-2 victory.

The night’s matchup was originally set to be Felix Hernandez facing Kuroda, but Seattle chose to stay in rotation despite the rain delay.

Both teams were quick to score, each adding one run to the scoreboard in the first. Stefen Romero singled, followed by a Robinson Cano double to right putting the Mariners up 1-0. Since 2005, Cano has more doubles than anyone in Major League Baseball with an impressive 381.

The Yankees first at bat resulted in a home run from Jacoby Ellsbury to tie the game at one. This is the player’s first home run as a Yankee. Last time a Yankees first batter hit a home run was August 21, 2012, by captain Derek Jeter.

Brad Miller was allowed first base after a fielding error was made by shortstop Jeter. Michael Saunders would continue the momentum with a hit up the middle, advancing Miller to third. Once Cano stepped up to the plate, aside from plenty of boos he earned his second RBI of the night with a force out, scoring Miller to give his team a one-run lead.

The Mariners continued to score in the fourth giving itself a three-run lead to put the game at 4-1. Kyle Seager started off the inning with a single to right. Ackley would then walk, followed by Brad Miller’s liner to left scoring Ackley. A ground-rule double by Saunders gave Seattle its fourth run.

New York would earn its second, and last, run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Alfonso Soriano singled on a line drive to left with two outs in the inning. Mark Teixeira would reach first on an error by Cano, allowing Brian McCann to single and score Soriano, putting the score at 4-2.

The Yankees bullpen used four pitchers on the night: Kuroda, Matt Thornton, Adam Warren and Shawn Kelley. Seattle used three pitchers: Roenis Elias, Yoervis Medina and closer Fernando Rodney. Rodney closed out the game by striking out Gardner, who struck out looking. Before leaving the game, Elias earned a career-best 10 strikeouts.

Notes:

This season has seen two teams use 19 pitchers before May, making Major League history. Those teams are the Yankees and White Sox. Each team had also used one position player.

Babe Ruth had his first home run as a Yankee on May 1, 1920.

Replacing Michael Pineda in the rotation is David Phelps. Pineda is expected to be unavailable three to four weeks due to a Grade 1 strain.
