MLB: Looking Back at April for the AZ Diamondbacks
As the brutal month of April finally came to end for the Arizona Diamondbacks and with all of the negative stuff that was written and said about them, I decided to see if there were any positives for the month of April 2014 for this team. You might think I am foolish or have no idea what I am talking about, especially after the Diamondbacks finished April at 9-22, with a 3-15 (2 games in AU) record at home in Chase Field. However I did find a few positives worth writing about.
First, I have to say Miguel Montero was a positive with his bat. He started off last year in a slump and never really got his bat going. He looks to be over his back issues of last season as well. He caught 28 of the 31 games and he hit in twelve of his last thirteen games in April. It looks like he has adjusted his bat control and stopped trying to hit every pitch out of the ballpark.
How about Chris Owings who was named rookie of the month for April. He hit .313 26-for-83 and also led NL rookies with five doubles, six extra-base hits, 26 hits and total games with 28. He also stole four bases, which was good for second among NL rookies, and was tied for second with seven runs scored. He should be in the running for the NL Rookie of the Year Award at the end of the season if these sorts of stats continue.
Paul Goldschmidt proved that last year was not a one chance occurrence season. Coming off a season in which he led the National League in just about every offensive category many wondered if he could equal or even better those stats this season. His April performance makes it easy to say he is one of the best players in the game today. He led the NL league in hits with 40 and doubles with 12. He also played in all 31 of the teams April games.
Brad Ziegler, who did struggle with his first 3 April appearances, has since returned to his dominating and confident control. Since April 8th, he has appeared in 12 games with 10 2/3 innings pitched and allowed zero runs. He only gave up three hits and was his usual self with getting batters to hit groundballs for sure outs.
Now that may not seem like a lot of positives, but at least there were a few and hopefully the month of May will be better than the month of April. Winning at home will be the key to a successful month. They play 12 of their 27 games in May at Chase Field.
