Phoenix Mercury Preview
Are you disappointed that the Phoenix Suns season is over and you have no local basketball to watch? Let me tell you what will be going on at US Airways Arena starting May 26th. Professional basketball! Yes indeed. The WNBA Phoenix Mercury will begin their 16th season. They start off on the road for two games beginning Sunday May 20th in Minnesota, then off to Tulsa on Tuesday May 22nd. They finally come home and will face their archrival the LA Sparks, on Saturday May 26th at 7:00PM. If you have never been to a Phoenix Mercury game you are missing out on some great professional basketball. The Mercury have won three conference titles (1998, 2007, and 2009) and 2 WNBA championships (2007, 2009).
This year’s team will still feature one of the greatest players in WNBA history, Diana Taurasi. Along with DeWanna Bonner, and Candice Dupree they will continue to be a great triple threat. Even though Penny Taylor will miss the season due to an injury; the Mercury will still have a very competitive team. Rookie Samantha Prahalis from Ohio State will be an exciting player to watch as well.
Another player to watch, who has hopes of making the team will be former Arizona State Sun (Lady) Devil, Dymond Simon. A 2006 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix, Dymond helped lead St. Mary’s to 5A State Championships in 2003-04 (35-0 record). But after two knee injuries at Arizona State Simon was not drafted in the WNBA.
Dymond spent time playing professionally in Australia and Croatia last year; now she is trying to make the roster of the Phoenix Mercury. So here’s to a local sports star hoping she makes it with her home town team the Phoenix Mercury.
The Mercury will play a 34 game schedule, with 17 games at home. The regular season runs until late September. The Mercury have several great promotions for ticket purchases. Go to http://www.wnba.com/mercury/tickets/tix_central.html for more ticket information.
