SaberCats defeat Rattlers 77 to 70
After a near perfect first three quarters from an offensive point of view and with the Rattlers leading the SaberCats at the end of the third quarter 63 to 49, the fourth quarter was like a scene out of Rod Serling’s twilight zone. The Rattlers committed four turnovers in the fourth quarter in front of 9,280 fans to lose for the second time this season to the San Jose SaberCats. With the lose, the Rattlers fell to third place in the National Conference West Division behind San Jose and Utah.
The fourth quarter collapse started at 12:17 of the fourth corner when the SaberCats recovered the kick off in the Arizona Rattlers end zone when Kerry Reed lost sight of the ball. This tied the score at 63 each. When things could not get worse for the Rattlers, they did. A Nick Davila pass was intercepted in the San Jose end zone which not only prevented a Rattler score but put the ball back in the SaberCats hands which resulted in another touchdown. With one minute left in the game and the SaberCats leading 77 to 70, the SaberCats tried an onside kick which they recovered. However, the Rattlers came up big and made a defensive stop. With 24 seconds left, the Rattlers started on the SaberCats 8 yard line. After a run play and then a penalty on the SaberCats and with .15 seconds left in the game, Davila set up to pass only to get sacked by a blindside hit which caused a fumble which was recovered by the SaberCats. Finale score: SaberCats 77 and the Rattlers 70.
After the game I spoke to Coach Kevin Guy. “If we are going to go where we want to go, we are going to have to get mentally tougher”. “This is the second time we’ve let that team come back and beat us in the fourth quarter when we had a 14 point lead”. Guy said. “We going to have to learn to put teams away. We havent’ learned how to finish yet”. “It is a long season, all we can control is what we’ve got in front of us and we got to recover from this mentally and physically and get ready to play Chicago next week.”
The next home game is next Saturday, May 12 against the National Conference Central Divsion leader Chicago Rush. For tickets call 602-514-TDTD.
